UCSD Pre-SOMA

Home

Welcome everyone!

The Osteopathic Medical Association for Students (OMAS) was an organization that was created by Arnold E. Cuenca, DO to increase osteopathic medicine awareness at UCSD. The inaugural meeting took place on November 23, 1999.

Founding officers (L to R): Wahida Azimi, Sanas Sadrieh, Arnold Cuenca, Tina Ashrafzadeh, and Leah Patrick

OMAS eventually became a part of SOMA, a nationally recognized osteopathic medical association, and is now a pre-med chapter.

UCSD Pre-SOMA has 5 primary goals:

1) To increase osteopathic medicine awareness at UCSD.

2) To dispel any misconceptions or prejudices about osteopathic medicine

3) Serve as a "clearing-house" of information about osteopathic medicine.

4) Serve as a support group for those applying to osteopathic medical schools

5) Find D.O.'s for students interested in volunteering/shadowing a D.O. in San Diego

In addition to UCSD, an OMAS chapter at SDSU was also started by Glenn Matanza with the help of Dr. Cuenca and held its inaugural meeting on February 18, 2000. OMAS-SDSU has also converted to a pre-medical chapter of SOMA as well.
